Strengthens a weak or recessed chin with an implant or by repositioning the chin bone, balancing the profile with the nose and neck.
Chin augmentation addresses a chin that is recessed relative to the nose, lips, and neck, which can make the nose look larger and the neck look heavier than they are. It is often considered together with rhinoplasty or a neck lift, since the chin, nose, and neck form one profile. The operation changes the projection of the chin, not the jaw's bite or function, and patients with bite problems need a different evaluation.
Two main paths exist. An implant, usually silicone, is placed through a small incision under the chin or inside the lower lip and positioned over the chin bone. Alternatively, a sliding genioplasty cuts the chin bone itself and advances it, fixing it with plates and screws — a bigger operation that also allows vertical changes. Surgery is usually outpatient under general anesthesia or sedation and takes about one to two hours.
Chin implant. The simpler, more common option for projection alone, with a range of sizes and shapes fitted to the chin. Sliding genioplasty. Repositions the patient's own chin bone, allowing forward and vertical movement, and avoiding an implant. Chin augmentation with rhinoplasty. Balances the profile as a whole, since nose and chin proportions interact. Chin augmentation with neck lift. Improves the jawline-to-neck transition when a weak chin contributes to neck fullness.

There is no single fixed charge for chin augmentation, and this guide does not publish prices: the written quote you receive at consultation is the binding figure.
Factors that commonly move the total include the surgeon's experience, the facility type (office procedure suite, ambulatory surgery center, or hospital), the type and length of anesthesia, the complexity of the surgical plan, whether other procedures are combined in the same operation, garments and follow-up visits, and the revision terms. Ask for an itemized written quote that states exactly what is included, and what would cost extra if a revision or an overnight stay became necessary.
Expect swelling and bruising of the chin and lower face for one to two weeks, with the chin feeling tight or numb at first. Many patients return to desk work within about a week and to full activity in about three to four weeks. With an implant placed through the mouth, oral hygiene and a soft diet matter for the first days; with a genioplasty, bone healing takes longer and the chin may feel stiff for weeks. Final profile emerges over several months.
Risks include bleeding, infection (a particular concern for implants placed through the mouth), implant displacement or asymmetry, numbness of the lower lip or chin, bone changes under an implant over time, and dissatisfaction with the profile change. Genioplasty adds risks of bone healing problems and longer numbness. A surgeon who evaluates the bite and the whole profile, not just the chin in isolation, is essential.
