Reshapes the ears — most often pinning back prominent ears — for children and adults, with scars hidden behind the ear.
Otoplasty, or ear surgery, corrects ears that protrude, are misshapen, or are asymmetrical. The most common reason is prominent ears, where the ear lacks its normal fold or the bowl of the ear is too deep, making the ear stick out. It is one of the few cosmetic operations commonly performed on children, typically once the ears have nearly finished growing, as well as on adults who have been self-conscious about their ears for years.
Through an incision behind the ear, the surgeon reshapes the cartilage — folding it to create or deepen the normal fold, reducing the bowl of the ear, or both — and sutures it into its new position. The incision is hidden in the crease behind the ear. Surgery is usually outpatient under general anesthesia for children or local anesthesia with sedation for adults, and takes about one to two hours. A headband dressing is worn initially, then at night for several weeks.
Ear pinning (setback). Brings prominent ears closer to the head by reshaping cartilage and reducing bowl depth. Ear reduction. Reduces the overall size of large ears. Correction of specific deformities. Addresses constricted ears, Stahl's ear, or other congenital shapes, which may need more extensive cartilage work. Revision otoplasty. Corrects asymmetry or recurrence after a prior ear operation, which is more complex because of scarred cartilage.

There is no single fixed charge for otoplasty, and this guide does not publish prices: the written quote you receive at consultation is the binding figure.
Factors that commonly move the total include the surgeon's experience, the facility type (office procedure suite, ambulatory surgery center, or hospital), the type and length of anesthesia, the complexity of the surgical plan, whether other procedures are combined in the same operation, garments and follow-up visits, and the revision terms. Ask for an itemized written quote that states exactly what is included, and what would cost extra if a revision or an overnight stay became necessary.
Expect soreness, swelling, and bruising for the first days, with a headband dressing worn continuously at first and then at night for several weeks to protect the new position while cartilage heals. Many patients return to school or desk work within about a week, and to sports or activities that risk ear contact in about four to six weeks. Final ear position settles over several months.
Risks include bleeding or fluid collections (a collection behind the ear needs prompt attention), infection, scarring (including thickened scars behind the ear), asymmetry, over-correction (ears pinned too tightly to the head), under-correction or recurrence as cartilage springs back, and numbness. Revision is sometimes needed for asymmetry or recurrence.
