Rebuilds the skin and soft tissue removed with a skin cancer, restoring function and appearance after the cancer itself has been fully removed.

What is skin cancer reconstruction?

Skin cancer reconstruction follows removal of a skin cancer, most often by Mohs surgery, which removes the cancer layer by layer until clear margins are confirmed. Once the cancer is gone, a defect remains — sometimes small, sometimes involving the nose, eyelid, lip, or ear, where even a small defect affects function and appearance. Reconstruction closes that defect in a way that preserves movement, protects the eye or mouth where relevant, and gives the best achievable appearance.

How is skin cancer reconstruction done?

The reconstructive surgeon works from the defect's size, depth, and location. Small defects may close directly or with a skin graft. Larger or more complex defects use local flaps — neighboring skin moved into the defect with its blood supply — chosen to match the area's skin quality and to keep scars in natural creases. Surgery is usually outpatient under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on complexity, and the reconstructive surgeon often works in coordination with the Mohs surgeon on the same day or soon after.

What are the options for skin cancer reconstruction?

Direct closure. The wound edges are brought together, suited to small, loose-skinned defects. Skin graft. Skin taken from another area (often behind the ear or above the collarbone) covers a defect that cannot close directly. Local flap. Neighboring skin is rotated or advanced into the defect, giving a better color and texture match than a graft. Complex reconstruction. For defects involving the eyelid, lip, or nose, multiple layers (skin, cartilage, lining) may need rebuilding, sometimes in stages.

What affects the cost of skin cancer reconstruction?

There is no single fixed charge for skin cancer reconstruction, and this guide does not publish prices: the written quote you receive at consultation is the binding figure.

Factors that commonly move the total include the surgeon's experience, the facility type (office procedure suite, ambulatory surgery center, or hospital), the type and length of anesthesia, the complexity of the surgical plan, whether other procedures are combined in the same operation, garments and follow-up visits, and the revision terms. Ask for an itemized written quote that states exactly what is included, and what would cost extra if a revision or an overnight stay became necessary.

What is recovery like after skin cancer reconstruction?

Expect swelling, bruising, and soreness for the first one to two weeks, with wound care and sun protection on the healing area. Sutures or dressings are managed at follow-up visits, and grafts need protection while they establish a blood supply. Many patients return to desk work within a few days to a week, with strenuous activity restricted until cleared. Scars mature over months, and Florida sun protection on the reconstructed area is important both for scar quality and for skin cancer prevention going forward.

What are the risks of skin cancer reconstruction?

Risks include bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, graft or flap failure (partial or complete), scarring, asymmetry, and functional problems such as eyelid or lip distortion when those structures are involved. Smoking increases wound-healing and flap-failure risk. Reconstruction does not change the need for ongoing skin surveillance: patients with one skin cancer need regular skin examinations, since further cancers are common.

What should I ask at a skin cancer reconstruction consultation?

  • How will my defect be closed, and what will the scar look like?
  • Will this be done the same day as my Mohs surgery, or staged?
  • How will eyelid, lip, or nose function be protected in my case?
  • What is the total quote, broken down, and what are the revision terms?
  • Can you confirm your board certification? (Check the badge on each profile in this directory.)
