What is thigh lift?

Thigh lift, or thighplasty, treats loose, sagging thigh skin that remains after major weight loss or with aging, which can cause chafing, hygiene difficulty, and clothing problems as well as appearance concerns. Like the arm lift, it is an excisional operation: when skin excess is the problem, liposuction alone will not fix it.

How is thigh lift done?

Through incisions in the groin crease, down the inner thigh, or both, depending on the pattern, the surgeon removes excess skin and fat and tightens the remaining tissue, sometimes with liposuction for contour. Surgery is usually outpatient or with a short overnight stay, under general anesthesia, and takes about two to three hours. Compression garments are worn during healing.

What are the options for thigh lift?

Inner thigh lift. An incision in the groin crease, with or without a vertical component down the inner thigh, for inner-thigh looseness. Outer thigh lift. Addresses the outer thigh and hip, often as part of a lower body lift after major weight loss. Thigh lift with liposuction. Liposuction removes fat and refines contour alongside skin excision; liposuction alone suits only fatty thighs with good skin elasticity.

Factors that commonly move the total include the surgeon's experience, the facility type (office procedure suite, ambulatory surgery center, or hospital), the type and length of anesthesia, the complexity of the surgical plan, whether other procedures are combined in the same operation, garments and follow-up visits, and the revision terms. Ask for an itemized written quote that states exactly what is included, and what would cost extra if a revision or an overnight stay became necessary.

What is recovery like after thigh lift?

Expect swelling, bruising, and tightness for the first weeks, with garments worn as directed and walking encouraged early. Many patients return to desk work in about two to three weeks and to full activity in about six to eight weeks, with strenuous leg exercise restricted until cleared. Groin incisions need careful hygiene and dryness during healing, and Florida humidity makes following wound-care instructions especially important.

What are the risks of thigh lift?

Risks include scarring (including widened scars in the groin area, which is under tension and movement), asymmetry, infection, fluid collections, poor wound healing, numbness, and leg swelling if lymphatic drainage is disturbed. Wound separation in the groin crease is a known concern and may need prolonged wound care. Results last longest when weight stays stable.
